Course Description
Introduction To LPSS or Street Law is a one semester elective course that is part of the Criminal Justice CTE Pathway. It is a practical, real life study of rights, laws, regulations, and events that are experienced in each individuals life. Students are expected to engage in discussions as part of the class and will participate in projects during the class. Guest speakers will also participate in the course during the semester.
Daily Activities and Homework
There will be guided readings, current events, and assignments from the student’s text, as well as supplemental materials provided by the instructor. Daily class assignments will be monitored and points awarded as part of the overall grade. We will often work on these projects in groups during class, but they will also be available for students to read and study further at home. Each student will have a textbook available to them from the class room set. A text book can be checked out if a student is absent.
Tests and Projects
Generally there will be some form of quiz or test every 3-4 weeks throughout the year. We will also have a final semester exam on the date set by the school for each individual class. Projects will require that students complete certain activities that will be submitted for grading throughout the year. There will be no study guides prior to tests. Use of a student notebook will provide ample resources for test reviews. The instructor does not give "Extra Credit" work to students.
Notebooks
Students are encouraged to have a three ring binder notebook that is used to keep all general assignments during the semester. The notebooks may be used for review and use during final semester exams. If there is a question on graded work, the student can verify scores if they save the work in their notebook. It is the student's responsibility to keep and update material for the notebooks, which may be used for taking the semester exams.
Website
The Street Law class will publish an official website at mrjsstreetlaw.weebly.com. This site is updated regularly and contains access to all information needed to complete the class. Work sheets, handouts, and other critical assignment work is available on this site. Students should check this site or Skyward before containing the instructor about missing assignments. It is the student's responsibility to check the website.
Classroom Rules and Procedures
The school rules as outlined in the Agenda will be followed. In addition, class procedures (Expectations) as listed on the main teacher page will also be followed.
Attendance (Not in effect during Corona Virus)
Students will receive an attendance grade on the final regular class period of the semester for 0-20 points. Missing class due to tardies and excessive absences reduces the in-class information and instruction that enhances total learning. Students will receive up to three absences/tardies without and point deduction. Two points will then be deducted for each additional absence/tardy up to a total of 20 points for the final grade in this category. Excused absences for school activities will be taken into consideration as exempted.
Grades
The electronic grade book will be updated as often as possible so students can go online and check their current status for assignments. This grade book will list assignments, point values, and student performance, along with an overall per cent. Final grades will be rounded up to the next highest point total for example a 79.5% would be moved up to 80% for a final grade. The following grade scale will be used:
90% - 100% = A
80% - 89% = B
70% - 79% = C
60% - 69% = D
Below 60% = FAIL
