Mr. J spent 31 years in the criminal justice field before retiring and entering the teaching field as a second career. He began his law enforcement activity with the Wyandotte County Sheriff's Department in Kansas City, Kansas through an internship while still in college. He worked in all areas of the Sheriff's Department eventually being appointed as the Undersheriff, a position he held for eight years. For much of his police career in Kansas City he specialized in criminal investigations and earned a Masters in Administration of Justice from Wichita State University specializing in investigations.
His next stop was as an assistant director of community corrections for a Judicial District in central Kansas. However, he accepted the position of Director of Public Safety/Chief of Police in Lindsborg, Kansas after about a year in corrections. There he managed the fire, ambulance, and police department for that jurisdiction which included Bethany College. Returning to northeast Kansas after eight years in "Little Sweden USA," Mr. Johnson served as a special investigator for the State of Kansas handling high profile child abuse cases.
Mr. J is certified as an instructor in a number of law enforcement specialities including defensive tactics, SWAT, drugs, and investigations. He was honored by the Commission For the Accreditation of Law Enforcement Agencies when his police department became the smallest law enforcement agency ever nationally accredited. His anti-drug presentations and work in the 1980's was recognized both nationally and in the state of Kansas.
After retiring from police work, Mr. J completed a masters degree in education from Pittsburgh State University and taught at Wyandotte HS in Kansas City before moving to Basehor-Linwood as a teacher and coach.
